USA Carbon Neutrality Lowest Cost

How can the United States achieve carbon neutrality at the lowest cost?

The U.S. Local Solar for All released a report that by 2030, the U.S. must deploy at least 103 GW of distributed solar energy and 137 GW of distributed energy storage to achieve the U.S. climate goals at the lowest cost.

The report uses conservative cost and technical assumptions to study how to use President Biden’s climate goals as key constraints to build the lowest-cost power grid: achieve 80% clean electricity by 2030 and achieve 50% economic carbon emission reduction; By 2050, 95% of the entire economy will be reduced in carbon emissions, and 100% of the economy will be electrified. The main findings include:

1. By 2030, at least 103 GW of distributed solar energy and 137 GW of distributed energy storage must be deployed to achieve the United States’ climate goals at the lowest cost.

2. Expanding the scale of distributed solar energy and energy storage reduces the pressure on public utility-scale resources. The utility-scale solar power generation capacity reached 579 GW, and the wind power generation capacity reached 442 GW.

3. Compared with deploying only utility-scale renewable energy, the expansion of distributed solar and energy storage could save US taxpayers more than US$109 billion by 2030.

4. By 2030, increasing local solar and energy storage will create more than 1.2 million new jobs in the United States.

The above report is consistent with the results of other studies that call for a significant increase in the capacity of local distributed solar and energy storage deployed on the US grid.

The US Department of Energy’s solar futures research report and the recent analysis by the Solar Energy Industry Association have reached similar conclusions: in the next ten years, distributed power generation (community and rooftop solar) must be faster than the previous ten years (2010 to 2020)

Only with a growth rate of two to four times can the country's climate and energy goals be achieved at the lowest cost.
